Sen. Ossoff: “This week, I will reaffirm my commitment to strengthen the friendship between our two countries”
In 2021, his first year in office, Senator Ossoff led a high-level economic delegation to Korea
At 36 years old, Senator Ossoff is the youngest United States Senator elected in three decades
Seoul, ROK — United States Senator Jon Ossoff from the State of Georgia has arrived in the Republic of Korea to lead a 4-day economic delegation and strengthen US-Korea relations as both nations mark the 70th anniversary of their alliance.
During his visit, Senator Ossoff will work to strengthen economic, scientific, cultural, and security ties between the United States and Korea.
In his first year in office, Senator Ossoff led an economic delegation to Korea, where he led high-level engagements with Korean business and government leaders, including Hanwha Qcells, Hyundai, and SK, as he worked to strengthen relations and boost trade between Korea and his home State of Georgia. Senator Ossoff also met with then Presidential-candidate Yoon Suk-Yeol.
“This week, I will reaffirm my commitment to strengthen the friendship between our two countries,” Senator Ossoff said in a statement. “This is a special moment in relations between Georgia and Korea. Since the economic delegation that I led two years ago, we have made huge steps forward in trade and investment between Korea and the United States. I will sustain my strong representation of Georgia’s Korean American community as I strengthen the friendship between Korea and the United States and deepen investment between Georgia and Korea.”
The State of Georgia, which Senator Ossoff represents in the U.S. Senate, is home to over 73,000 Korean Americans.
Ahead of the trip, Senator Ossoff joined members of the Korean American community in the State of Georgia at the Korean Central Presbyterian Church of Atlanta where he announced the delegation and spoke about the importance of the U.S.–Korea relationship and the community’s contributions to Georgia.
In February, Senator Ossoff called on U.S. President Joe Biden to invite President Yoon for an Official State Visit to mark the 70th anniversary of the US-Korea alliance, which will take place in late April.
Senator Ossoff has remained a leader in strengthening U.S.-Korea relations.
In May 2022, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff took the U.S. Senate floor to pass the confirmation of Philip S. Goldberg as the next U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (ROK), and he remains frequently engaged with Korean leaders, including welcoming President-elect Yoon’s Official Delegation to the U.S. Congress last year.
During his first two years in office, Senator Ossoff has written and passed legislation to strengthen civil rights, to boost domestic advanced energy manufacturing, and to strengthen public health while leading bipartisan investigations of abuse and corruption.
At 36 years old, Senator Ossoff is the youngest United States Senator elected in three decades.
Prior to his election, Senator Ossoff led a team that investigated and exposed corruption, war crimes, and terrorism for international news organizations. In 2021, he won a crucial underdog election to secure the Senate majority for the Democratic Party.
